Styrofoam is a a trade name for a foamed polystyrene plastic.  Some foam no is also made from polyethylene further confusing the recycling markets.  The draw backs to recycling this product are daunting.  First, items used for food are often so contaminated with food product that they are not processable into clean recycled material.  Second, foamed material of any kind is designed to be light weight thus the cost of transportation for recycling is often many times higher than the value of the finished recycled product making it very prohibitive to recycle this material.
